Since the news about KitKat, the Android 4.4 update, was recently released, many smartphone users have been curious about whether their device will be getting the upgrade on their devices. Well, the list has been released and, as expected, it contains most of the newer (released within the last 18 months) smartphones and tablets from major carriers such as Motorola, Samsung, HTC, Google and Sony. Also released is a number of devices that will not be receiving the Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade.
Google Devices to get the Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade
According to this Google statement, Google Nexus will not receive the Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade because it falls outside of the 18 month window. However, all Google Nexus devices that have been released within that 18 month window (Nexus 4, Nexus 5, etc.) will receive the upgrade. Google Nexus users will still have access to the Android 4.3 KitKat upgrade.
Devices getting the upgrade:
- Google Nexus 4
- Google Nexus 7
- Google Nexus 10
- Google Nexus 5 (will come with KitKat preinstalled)
Devices not getting the upgrade:
Any Google Nexus devices released over 18 months ago.
Samsung Devices to get the Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade
Devices getting the upgrade:
- Samsung Galaxy S3
- Samsung Galaxy S4
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Active
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom
- Samsung Galaxy Note II
- Samsung Galaxy Note III
- Samsung Galaxy Mega (unsure if it’s version 5.8, 6.3 or both)
- Samsung Galaxy Tab II
- Samsung Galaxy Tab III
Devices not getting the upgrade:
No official list at this time, although if a phone is not listed here, and wasn’t released within the past 2 years, it’s most likely not receiving the upgrade.
